A woman throws rose petals during a funeral for schoolgirls killed in a US-Israeli attack in Minab.
The New York Times reports that the United States is responsible for the attack on a girls' primary school in Minab, Iran, on February 28.
According to the publication, the Tomahawk missile strike on the school was caused by a targeting error. American forces were targeting a nearby IRGC base, of which the school building had previously been part. US Central Command officers relied on outdated intelligence, leading to the tragedy.
The strike killed at least 175 people, most of them children and teenagers, and injured another 95. Remnants of ordnance with U.S. markings were found at the missile impact site.
The findings are still preliminary, but sources familiar with the investigation confirm that the error was made by the American side. The Pentagon is continuing to investigate why the outdated data was not re-verified.
