The first session of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, following the 1979 Revolution, opened on 21 August 21, 1980. It replaced the pre-revolutionary National Consultative Assembly, with Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani serving as the inaugural chairman from 1980 to 1989. The body was formalized following the 1989 constitutional revision.
Since the Iranian Revolution, the Parliament of Iran has been led by six chairmen. Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani served as the inaugural chairman from 1980 to 1989.
Mehdi Karroubi held the position twice, first from 1989 to 1992 and then again from 2000 to 2004.
