The ancient Chinese city of Shicheng, nicknamed the “Atlantis of the East”, located under water at a depth of 40 meters, has again attracted the attention of researchers.

In 1959, the Chinese government made the bold decision to flood the city of Shicheng to make way for the construction of a hydroelectric dam. This event seemed to suspend time within the city, and now Shicheng stands as a mute witness to the rich history and culture.

After many decades underwater, Shicheng was rediscovered in 2001 as a result of an expedition aimed at unraveling the mystery of this underwater metropolis. And to the delight of researchers, the city is still in surprisingly good condition thanks to the fact that it is surrounded by fresh water.

In 2017, Shicheng became accessible to the public, and diving tourists from all over the world began diving into its depths to appreciate the uniqueness of this underwater artifact.

Shicheng is also known as the "Lion City" due to its location next to Wu Shi Mountain. The wide streets of the underwater city are still decorated with stone images of dragons, phoenixes and historical inscriptions dating back to 1777.

However, despite research, the origin of Shicheng remains a mystery. Experts from the Chinese National Geography published photographs in 2011, fueling interest in this ancient city, but some parts of it remain unexplored.

Experienced divers from all over the world flock to Zhejiang province to dive into the waters of the lake and immerse themselves in the history of the ancient city.

Shicheng has become not only a unique historical site, but also a real living museum submerged under water. Now everyone can witness the resurrection of the “Atlantis of the East” and enjoy the mysterious beauties of this underwater world.
