A 75-year-old resident of Loc Ninh commune in Quang Binh province (Vietnam) said that for the last 50 years she had been drinking exclusively water and sweet soft drinks. Her unusual diet began in 1963, when she was struck by lightning during the war, changing her outlook on nutrition.
After being struck by lightning, Bui Thi Loy lost interest in solid food and began her unusual journey of relying solely on water and soft drinks. Despite pressure from family and friends, she remained true to her choice, giving up solid food in 1970. Her refrigerator is filled with water bottles.
Bui Thi Loy claims that just the smell of food makes her sick. Despite her strange diet, she raised her children, although she never ate the food she prepared. Now that her children are grown and gone, her kitchen remains idle.
Despite popular belief in the need for a balanced diet, Bui Thi Loy maintains her health by relying on her unique diet. Doctors from the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Don Hoi note that sweet soft drinks can quickly replenish energy and support the functioning of the digestive system.
However, they warn that such diets can be dangerous, leading to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
